| Introduction of the time converter |
“So Kenou- what is this all about? I’m a very busy person and I have to study.” Mai said while stuffing a blueberry muffin in her mouth. Her green eyes widened as she gulped down her mocha. Kenou was sitting, her arms crossed in front of her, tapping her foot and concentrating on the large cup of Black tea. Kai. You’re one good cop, but you have a problem with coming on time. Makaze rested his head on the palm of his hand and stared lazily through his glasses.
“Kenou, I’m not going to start my speech until Kai gets here, this has more to do with her than anything. We have to find out if she wants to get Vanessa or not. This is a big operation- we need the best in the business, and she’s it.” He looks at his watch and sighs. “Kai and Mai are a great team- so in order to get this done right, we need both of them.” Kenou and Mai stare at him, wide eyed and speechless.
Running through the crowded streets, Kai pushes her skirt down and holds her backpack to her chest. I’m late! Kenou is going to give me another one of her “You don’t act your age” lectures that don’t even make sense, she makes me feel like I’m two years old! She jogs up to the door of the station and throws the door open. The cops and the people wave ans smile at her. “Kai!!” She smiles and before she could actually say anything, she takes one step and falls to the floor . “Ack!”After rubbing her head, she pushes through the maze of seats leading to her office. Kenou spotted her first. “Hey- you’re late.”
Kai slapped her hand on the top of her desk and struggled to catch her breath. She pushes the chair behind the desk out and sits down. “Ah, now what’s so important?” Kai leaned back in the chair and propped her feet up on her desk. Her blue eyes were concentrating on the look on Kenou’s face. The usually bright and happy face was stern and angered. “Kai- You and Mai have to get Vanessa.. Makaze- show these girls what you’ve finished.” Makaze nods and walks to the door.
“I’ll show you my lab ladies.”
The area was large, filled with blueprints and coffee cups, which he “Borrowed” from his assistant, Noah. The sun rarely entered the room, seeing how the plants Kai gave him were dying slowly. Eerie and dark, this room startled Mai as she walked in, causing her to literally hop into her partner’s arms.
“Iieee!!! Kai, save me!!” She squealed, squeezing Kai’s neck tighter with every step.
“Mai, I’m warning you...get off me!” Kai growled. She let her go and was dragged to the floor of the lab, yelling and wrestling with Mai. She soon maneuvered her to the floor, giggling and begging for mercy.
“Kai- KAI! I give up!! Mercy!” Her yell echoed, as she struggled to free her arm, which was twisted behind her. Makaze and Noah were watching, wondering what age these two cops really were. Noah laughed and whispered to him. “Which one is your....koi?” Makaze’s face reddened and he cleared his throat. “Noah!” His professional look melted away as he stared at Kai. That smile. I like to hear her laugh and see her blue eyes dance like the most beautiful stars in the sky. Koi? Is she my koi? We haven’t seen each other for a long time, how can I bring up our past when Kenou is sending her away? I need time to think, maybe it’s a good thing we’ll be separated for a while. It wouldn’t be good if she-
“Makaze. Makaze? You alright sir?” Noah noticed his distant look and shook his arm. “Hey!”
Makaze’s look changed and he snapped back into attention. I have to stop doing that. I shouldn’t worry. He shook his head and walked over to his newly created machine.
“This is what you and Mai will be using to go back in time to apprehend Vanessa. I call it, a time converter, it is my greatest invention ever.” He bellowed, causing Mai and Kai to sit up and dust themselves off. Kai walked up to him and stared at the strange contraption.
“So how does it work?” She muttered, checking for bruises and scratches.
“It’s kinda complicated, but I’ll try my best to explain. This large circular machine is my time converter. it doesn’t look like much, but really, it’s quite a miraculous machine. When you step into the machine, the door is sealed literally air tight, no light can enter nor escape. Then with the, in simple terms, controller you enter the time desired.”
“Sounds easy enough.” Mai retorted, poking at the control pad. Her eyes narrowed on Makaze, who was tapping his foot at her response. What a jerk...
“Don’t rush me, this is where it gets complicated. While you don’t realize anything has happened yet, you have actually already traveled through time. When your door opens, you see a different time, when the door opens here, we all discover that you are no longer in the time converter.” He sighed, wiping his forehead. Kai understands- why in the hell can’t she?!
“Wait, wait, woah- I thought the converter goes with us.” Mai shook her head and looked at it.
“It does...” He blinked and clicked his tongue, trying to contain his anger.
“Then why does it also stay with you?” A snicker came on her face and she simply pointed her finger into the air, as though she’s proven a point.
Makaze was beginning to get annoyed with Mai’s asinine comments and continued. “Ok... now pay attention. The time converter creates sort of a duplicate of itself wherever it goes.”
“A... duplicate?”
The scientist lost his control and glared right through Mai. I can’t stand your stupidity! I’m tired of saying this like you’re 5 years old! That’s it!! He dramatically raised his hand and tried to finish his explanation. “Yeah, you see time is kinda like a stack of index cards. Each millisecond is represented by an index card. Because of complications in the time-space continuum my machine can’t actually ‘travel’ through time it just creates a copy of itself on another ‘index card’ of time.”
Mai stared overwhelmed at the boy who just said more than her Physics teacher ever said throughout the whole year.“Great. So, uh what do we do with this thing when we get to the next time?”
He grinned and scoffed in victory. You liked that- didn’t you? Ha! I’m a genius, and you’re not! “Easy, push the button on your time inversion remote manipulator-”
“My what?!” Both Kai and Mai opened their mouths and shook their heads in confusion.
*sweatdrop* “-your controller. Then the time converter compresses it self to the size of a small suitcase. And uh, I guess you can probably figure out the rest.” He pushes a button and the chamber opens. Mai walks over to it and stands in position. Her green eyes were slightly clouded with fear.
“Uh- when are we supposed to go?”
Kenou walks through the door and holds out her clipboard. “You two are supposed to leave tonight. In fact- we tracked V down to A.C. 195. Now all you have to do is find her. You know the drill Kai.” Kai stood next to Makaze, speechless. You mean I have to leave tonight? What about my kitty- and my house?! “Makaze. Can you watch my house?” She tosses him the keys and turns to the machine. “Alright- let’s get this started. Mai- go to my locker and grab my duffel bag.”
After preparing for two whole hours, Mai and Kai were positioned in the machine. Makaze was fiddling with the controls in the far corner of the room. “Oh, Kai. I forgot to tell you. Since you will be traveling through different times, you will momentarily assimilate abilities that will help you fit in. Some of them will stick with you- some will leave when you leave that time.” He looked up from the screen, Kai was staring at him again- her blue eyes sparkling. “Makaze- you’re telling me that whatever time we go to- we get an ability? How can we tell that we have one?”
“Oh!” Makaze walked over to Kai and pulled out a little controller. “Here, push the button and
“Simple. Right when you get out of the machine in the new time you’ll change. Abilities- Clothing and sometimes even hair color. What ever is needed- Don’t forget, Vanessa has been missing for a year, my old time machine didn’t work right, when you shifted into the past- you’ll stay exactly the same. You can’t change- so her uniform (with her badge on it) couldn’t be removed. Her badge still has the tracking device in it so it won’t be hard to get her at all. Now are you two ready?”
